Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes | Servings: Serves 4 to 6 as a side dish

Making fried tomatoes for the first time turned out to be a delightful surprise! This easy snack recipe uses both green and red tomatoes, each bringing its unique flavor and texture to the dish. Green tomatoes are firmer and tangier, perfect for frying as they hold up well in the heat and absorb the savory seasonings. Red tomatoes, on the other hand, are sweeter and juicier, adding a nice contrast when they're ripe but still firm. For frying red tomatoes, choose varieties like Roma or Beefsteak, which are meatier and hold their shape better during cooking. This dish pairs exceptionally well with our Honey Basil Cornbread and Cajun Shrimp and Grits, making it a versatile choice for any gathering.

Ingredients:

  • 4 green tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick

  • 2 red tomatoes (Roma or Beefsteak preferred), sliced 1/4 inch thick

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal

  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Tomatoes: Wash and slice both green and red tomatoes, patting them dry.

  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, bread crumbs, seasoned salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  3. Make Egg Wash: Whisk eggs and milk in a separate bowl.

  4. Coat Tomatoes: Dip tomato slices first in egg wash, then in flour mixture.

  5. Fry the Tomatoes: In a skillet, heat oil over medium-high. Fry tomatoes until golden, about 2-3 minutes per side.

  6. Drain and Serve: Let the fried tomatoes drain on paper towels and serve hot.

This simple snack showcases the distinct flavors and textures of each tomato type, making it a versatile and crowd-pleasing dish. Whether you’re looking for a quick appetizer or a tasty side, these fried tomatoes are sure to impress.
